MCC match ends in rain affected draw
Friday 24 June 2016
The Blues welcomed MCC to Fennerís on Wednesday for the annual 3-day match, a highlight of the calendar. Despite rain delaying the start, and bringing the end of the match forwards, the weather abated enough to allow five good sessions of cricket in the middle.
MCC had no hesitation in inserting Cambridge on a green surface, returning Blue Alasdair Pollock immediately vindicating the decision with the wicket of Tom Colverd 3rd ball of the match. Abbott and Chohan rebuilt for the home side, before the latter was unlucky to be caught down the leg side. Bardolia and Dalgleish came and went too quickly for the home side, Patel offered a little resistance, and Tice joined Abbott in adding 50 for the 6th wicket. Abbott rode his luck heavily, dropped at mid-wicket, edging through the corden and avoiding fielders with top edges on two occasions, but eventually brought up his three figures in a resilient knock. Crichard added to the total with some lusty blows over cover, seeing the blues to a well-fought 271 all out on a pitch which offered assistance to the bowling side.
Dalgleish and Crichard bowled with excellent control for the home side, the former rewarded with three wickets for his efforts; Patel spun dozens past the edge, before MCC took the brave decision to declare 50 runs behind Cambridge (225-7) in a bid to move the game forward swiftly.
Unfortunately the weather saw things differently, allowing almost no play in the evening of Day 2 and a waterlogged pitch ruling out any play on Day 3.
Cambridge next welcome Arabs to Fennerís on Sunday, 11am start.
