The Blues were finally given a break from the weather gods when a gorgeously sunny day presented itself as the setting for the team’s first home fixture against a strong combined services XI. Stand in captain, Tom Colverd won the toss and elected to bowl on an untested Fenner’s wicket. The Blues’ new ball pair started off promisingly but some positive batting from the opposition openers saw the run rate start to escalate. By lunch, it was well and truly proven that Fenner’s had returned to its traditional state of being a batting paradise, as the combined services posted 367 in their 50 overs. This included two centuries, one of which was hit in 45 balls.
The Blues could do little but remain positive and most batsman did exactly that. All of the top order made speedy contributions, with Chohan and Dewhurst chalking up the seasons first two half centuries. However, 367 was always going to be an all but insurmountable task. In the pursuit of quick runs, the middle and lower order quickly perished, bringing the innings to an end a few overs before the allotted 50, and several many runs away from the target.
