One of the highlights of the season – the annual fixture against the ‘Nuncs – took place on a breezy Sunday at Fenner’s. Assembled by skipper Paddy Sadler, the Quidnuncs side included Blues from the past fifteen years. From Phil Hughes (hadn’t played a game of cricket for three years) to Tom Balderson (a stalwart of the Cheshire Leagues), the ‘Nuncs had a decent blend of youth and experience. Batting first, CUCC posted a respectable 268-6 with Sam Turner (51) laying the foundations, whilst Aaron Amin (61) provided the impetus at the end. Particular mention to Conor Emerton who ended up with figures of 10-0-60-4, whilst the fielding performances of Gus Kennedy and Pieter Daneel never fail to disappoint.
At 30-3 in reply, the Quidnuncs looked to be struggling. However, Ashok (47) and Kennedy (35) rebuilt to keep the game finely poised. The introduction of spin was crucial on a turning wicket, with the batsman finding it increasingly difficult to score. Regular wickets fell in the middle overs, and despite some hearty ball striking from Lodwick, Emerton and Day, the ‘Nuncs fell short by 44 runs. Special mention to Jovan Dhariwal at the end for a direct hit from backward point, as well as deceiving Paddy Sadler with a looping, grenade-like delivery to seal victory. Post-match refreshments were enjoyed on Parkers Piece after the match, with a few stragglers marching onto the Cambridge Blue for pie, chips and gravy.
