The Blues travelled to sunny Nottingham for their first fixture of the season, following the cancellation of all previous games due to bad weather. The legacy of this weather lived on in the form of a wet wicket, on which Cambridge were asked to bat first. An early wicket proved vindication for the hosts before S Turner (30) and D Chohan (19) steadied the ship. More notably, a productive stand between debutant D Murty (42) and bastion A Dewhurst (37) did much to bring the Blues’ total to a hard-fought 175. The difficult batting conditions persisted despite the relentless sun, with the pitch being particularly receptive to spin. Individual bowling figures very much reflect this. T Colverd (5.3-0-24-4) was ably assisted by T Balderson (10-3-12-2); N Winder (9-2-23-2) was also impressive. N Winder also secured a crucial run-out to dismiss a very fine Nottingham batsman who looked threatening from the outset. Ultimately, Nottingham were dismissed for 125; this is testament to a disciplined bowling performance from the Blues which made use of prevailing conditions. A key lesson to learn for the next match is building on starts; with no batsman reaching 50, there was no anchor for subsequent explosion. S Gandhi hasn’t been practising the ramp for nothing…
