Hone-MacGregor Trophy 2026

This week CUCC once again hosts the Hone-MacGregor Trophy. Three matches will be played in 50 overs per side format:

9th June, Cambridge University v Irish Universities

10th June, University of St Andrews v Irish Universities

11th June, Cambridge University v University of St Andrews

Play starts at 13:00 on 9th and 11:00 thereafter. All are welcome.

Messrs Hone and MacGregor were the first recorded Irish and Scottish cricket Blues, hence the name of the trophy.

Nathaniel Hone was born in Monkstown in 1861 and after school at St. Columba’s College, Dublin, Ireland and at Rugby School, came up to Trinity College Cambridge and won his blue in 1881.  Soon after, he died in Limerick after being taken unwell on a cricket tour in Na Shuler and given the wrong medicine.

Gregor MacGregor was a double Blue in Rugby Union and Cricket (1888-1891), later representing Scotland and England respectively.  Born in Merchiston in 1869, then educated at Uppingham School and Jesus College Cambridge, he went on to work in the London Stock Exchange whilst captaining Middlessex CCC and playing eight Test Matches.  He died in London in 1919.  He kept wicket for Cambridge at the time of S.M.J. Woods, the fastest amateur bowler of his time and, as noted in 1888 by Percy Piggott, the famous Fenner’s scorer and manager and local journalist, ”MacGregor amazed everyone by the manner in which he stood close up behind the wickets and took Woods’ express deliveries as though they had been the veriest slow spinners”.
